Associate Professor, or Professor position (Global 30 International Programs)

The Chemistry Program in the Nagoya University Global 30 International Programs invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track, Associate Professor, or Professor position.

We encourage candidates who have shown excellence in teaching Chemistry in English to students at the undergraduate level to apply. The G30 Program is known for its small class sizes, motivated students, and international atmosphere. The G30 Chemistry Program is co-organized by the Department of Chemistry (Graduate School of Science), the Department of Molecular and Macromolecular Chemistry, the Department of Materials Chemistry and the Department of Biomolecular Engineering (Graduate School of Engineering). Standard teaching load is usually eight courses per year. A course is equivalent to one 90-minute lecture per week for 15 weeks. The successful applicant will also serve as an academic advisor for graduate students, contribute to the admissions process for both graduate and undergraduate students, and conduct research in one of our research groups in the Department of Chemistry (Graduate School of Science). The Department of Chemistry in the Graduate School of Science is the academic home to two of Nagoya University's six Nobel Laureates, Professor Noyori Ryoji and Professor Osamu Shimomura.

Possible courses to be taught in English include:

  • Parts of General Chemistry (e.g. Fundamentals of Chemistry I, Laboratory in Chemistry)
  • Chemistry Seminar, Physical Chemistry I, II, Quantum Chemistry I, II
  • Core Physical Chemistry (Graduate school)


  1. Doctoral degree in Chemistry or a related field, with teaching experience
  2. Demonstrated ability to advise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  3. Willingness to participate in the International Programs of the university, including but not limited to teaching courses to Japanese students and some administrative duties
  4. Strong interpersonal skills and evidence of success in a multicultural environment with students, faculty, administration, and the local community
  5. Record of research experience in Physical Chemistry
  6. English fluency sufficient to teach abovementioned courses
  7. Japanese language proficiency is welcome though not required


The initial contract will start in October 2020 and terminate in September 2024. Contingent upon job performance, the contract may be renewable as a permanent position.

  3. List of research achievements (including invited lectures and research grants)
  4. Summary of research experience (about 2 pages)
  5. Copies of main article reprints (maximum of 5 papers)
  6. Proposal for future research plans (1 page)
  7. Statement of teaching philosophy, addressing the applicant's ability to integrate creative thinking and global perspectives into the courses taught (1 page)
  8. Evidence of teaching excellence, such as any of the following items (if applicable):
    1. Copies of past course syllabi prepared and used by the applicant
    2. Results of student evaluations
    3. Public commendations, prizes, and other awards for teaching excellence
  9. The names of three personal references with contact details
