Admission Policy

The Department of Science at the Graduate School of Science at Nagoya University welcomes individuals with a solid foundation in natural science, a spirit of challenge, and a fresh creativity to pursue and elucidate the principles of nature.

Recruitment Overview

The Graduate School of Science at Nagoya University underwent organizational restructuring in April 2022. As part of this reorganization, a new educational and research framework has been established, consisting of 14 courses loosely coordinated according to specialization under the single major of Science.

This restructuring aims to promote integrated and interdisciplinary research that transcends the boundaries of the previous three majors. On the other hand, faculty members are organized into three areas: physical sciences, materials, and chemical and life sciences, from the perspective of undergraduate education.

Faculty members in these three areas collaborate across boundaries, depending on the course, to provide education to graduate students through cutting-edge research.

Upon enrollment, students spend the first six months without specifying a course, taking courses primarily in graduate education subjects and learning basic research techniques in the laboratory determined at the time of acceptance. In August, students submit their desired course assignments. After the course is assigned, they select two co-advisors from different laboratories within the course and proceed with their research. By selecting co-advisors from different laboratories, students are encouraged to engage in collaborative and integrative research.

There are two routes to admission to the Department of Chemistry (Materials and Chemical Biology Area) of the Science Major.

Comprehensive Selection for Science Programs This program is open to graduates or those with equivalent qualifications from other universities, faculties, or departments. For details, please refer to the recruitment guidelines for the year you wish to apply. Additionally, before applying, please contact the desired research laboratory to confirm your eligibility.
General Selection This program is open to all applicants who have graduated from university or possess equivalent qualifications. For details, please refer to the recruitment guidelines for the year you wish to apply.

In the Department of Chemistry (Materials and Chemical Biology Area), we believe that diversity, including the composition of graduate students from various universities and faculties and the presence of students with diverse backgrounds, is of utmost importance. We value gender balance and other forms of diversity. Therefore, we offer comprehensive selection for applicants from external institutions (other universities, faculties, and departments), aiming to open our doors to students specializing not only in chemistry but also in physics, biology, engineering, agriculture, and other fields.

Since the entrance examination for the academic year 2014 has been changed to replace the English written examination with an English proficiency test (TOEFL or TOEIC), we have actively worked to flexibly adapt the entrance examination questions. By reforming the entrance examination from various perspectives, we aim to create an even more open entrance examination system.

We believe that these efforts will lead to further activation of the Department of Chemistry at Nagoya University and strengthen its quality. Therefore, we hope that more students will take on this challenge.

If you are applying to the Department of Chemistry (Materials and Chemical Biology Area),
be sure to contact the laboratory you wish to enter before applying.
It is recommended that you discuss with the laboratory and, if possible, visit the laboratory before applying.

*Starting from 2022, we have introduced online application submissions. Before applying, please ensure you have the necessary devices such as a computer and printer, a valid email address, a facial photo, a payment method, and all required documents. Additionally, please register for a My Page account before applying. Please allow enough time for the application process. We will send important information regarding the entrance examination via email. Make sure to use an email address that you can easily access and that will not be changed or deleted.

*The recruitment details and selection methods may vary depending on the year. Please make sure to check the ‘Recruitment Guidelines’ for the year you wish to apply before taking the examination. The ‘Recruitment Guidelines’ are typically published on the Faculty of Science website around late April each year.

Voices of students admitted from other universities (general selection successful applicants)
Haruno Nakajima (Special Research Lab M2)

ーPlease tell us the name of your university (faculty).
I attended Meijo University (Faculty of Science and Technology) for the first and second years, and Gifu University (Faculty of Engineering) for the third and fourth years.

ーWhat kind of exam preparation did you do for the general entrance exam?
I also took the entrance exam for Gifu University’s graduate school, so I studied in a way that would also prepare me for that exam. I focused on studying from textbooks, starting from the basics and emphasizing areas that I didn’t understand well. I also looked at past exam questions that were published on the website to research what kind of questions were being asked.

ーWhat was your impression of the exam questions?
I did feel that there were quite a few challenging questions. However, I also realized the importance of having a strong foundation. I think that if you have a solid foundation, you can get through the exam to some extent.

ーWhat is your impression of graduate school since entering this graduate school?
There are many opportunities for learning here. There are various events such as lectures and overseas exchanges, and by diving into them, I can gain a lot of knowledge and insights, which is very enjoyable. I feel that it is a very well-equipped environment for someone like me who always wants to continue challenging myself.

Mami Ototake (Bioorganic Chemistry Laboratory M2)

ーPlease tell us the name of your university (faculty).
Ehime University Faculty of Engineering

ーWhat kind of exam preparation did you do for the general entrance exam?
I solved past entrance exam questions for graduate school, past regular test questions for my department, and commercial question sets. I made a point of reading the reference books used in my department.

ーWhat was your impression of the exam questions?
I had the impression that many problems could be solved by reading the textbooks carefully.

What is your impression of graduate school since entering this graduate school?
I think the environment for conducting research is excellent in terms of facilities and funding. There are also many lectures by external speakers, making it easy to learn about fields outside of my specialization.

Shunsuke Funada (Bioorganic Chemistry Laboratory M1)

ーPlease tell us the name of your university (faculty).
Doshisha University Faculty of Science and Engineering

ーWhat kind of exam preparation did you do for the general entrance exam?
I used Tokyo Kagaku-Dojin and Kagaku-Dojin problem sets, as well as past exam papers from various universities.

ーWhat was your impression of the exam questions?
I had the impression that I couldn’t afford to make careless mistakes and had to be sure to get the right answers.

ーWhat is your impression of graduate school since entering this graduate school?
I had the impression that I could personally conduct a variety of experiments.
